another quote for the day

anyone who knows me — knows that I am very fond of Tim Keller – especially his beautiful, bald head.
I so appreciate his theology more than anything however.
Here is a snippet of it…

“Jesus’ teaching consistently attracted the irreligious while offending the Bible-believing, religious people of His day. However, in the main, our churches today do not have this effect.
The kind of outsiders Jesus attracted do not bother coming to our churches, even our most avant-garde ones. We tend to draw buttoned-down, moralistic people. The licentious and liberated or the broken and marginal avoid church.
That can only mean one thing.
If the preaching of our ministers and the practice of our parishioners do not have the same effect on people that Jesus had, then we must not be declaring the same message that Jesus did.”
–Tim Keller

quote of the day

A quote by Jon Tyson, of Trinity Grace Church in NYC, gave to a group of young church planters at the Ecclesia National Gathering in 2009:

“If you’re young and you’re church planting, do not be the darling of the previous movement just because it’s easy and you’ll be successful. Embrace the pain of preaching to a culture that does not understand, that does not care, that does not want to hear. You’ll be of far more use to the kingdom of God preaching into the future rather than preaching into the past, where it’s easy to gather a crowd that’s already looking for consumer tidbits.”

Praying with the Psalms (Psalm 85)

Psalm 85 (For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.)
1 You, LORD, showed favor to your land;
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You forgave the iniquity of your people
and covered all their sins.
3 You set aside all your wrath
and turned from your fierce anger.
4 Restore us again, God our Savior,
and put away your displeasure toward us.
5 Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger through all generations?
6 Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
7 Show us your unfailing love, LORD,
and grant us your salvation.

Psalm 85 – Revival – Out of a bleak situation this psalm leads up to a point at which a gloriously fertle stretch of country comes into view.

A thought from Eugene Peterson:
‘Nothing suffers from time quite so much as religion. The skeletal structure of obedience becomes arthritic, and the circulatory system of prayer become sluggish. The prayer ‘revive us again’ keeps the body of Christ youthful & responsive to every new mercy and grace in God’

Prayer: O God, when my faith gets overladen with dust, blow it clean with the wind of your Spirit. When my habits of obedience get stiff and rusty, anoint them with the oil of your Spirit. Restore the enthusiasm of my first love for you and the alacrity of my first obedience to you, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

…then you have to tell an alternative story

“Neither revolution nor reformation can ultimately change a society, rather you must tell a new powerful tale, one so persuasive that it sweeps away the old myths and becomes the preferred story, one so inclusive that it gathers all the bits of our past and our present into a coherent whole, one that even shines some light into our future so that we can take the next step…If you want to change a society, then you have to tell an alternative story.”
-Ivan Illich, Austrian philosopher

Difficult subjects in the church

What did Jesus look like & does it matter?

What’s your continual prayer?

A Ray of Hope in South Florida (not about Lebron)
good quote(s)

“I said that if our ministry was not attracting the same kinds of people that Jesus attracted, then we were not preaching the same message that Jesus preached.”
“I learned that God’s capacity to clean things up is infinitely greater than our human capacity to mess things up.”

Should the church meets my needs?
